The 'Golden Hinde' departing Acapulco for the Pacific 1975 I wonder if anyone visiting this site remembers the Golden Hinde II arriving in San Francisco in March 1975? About half a million people witnessed the event. Drake had discovered California in 1578 and our vessel commemorated this part of his round-the-world voyage. We sailed from London to San Francisco over 18,000 miles. We took six months to commemorate the first half of Drake’s famous three year round~the~world voyage. This picture shows the Golden Hinde departing Acapulco on the last stage of the voyage to SF through the very rough and gale ridden Pacific ~ just in the same way that Drake had found that ocean. This picture has been widely used including a book cover and in magazines including the Observer Sunday supplement (unlike most of the pictures in the tallshipsandsmallships.com gallery which have never been published before). It is the oldest picture in the collection by many years and is the only one to have been widely used. I worked as an ordinary seaman onboard as a member of the third mate’s watch. I was also the filmmaker onboard. “The Voyage of the Golden Hinde” was shown on BBC TV and TV around the world. If you would like to buy a copy of the 30 minute (1976) documentary e-mail me. By the way, our ship had an ‘e’ on the end of its name because as everyone knows, Elizabethan nouns ended in ‘e’, as in tea shoppe. How the original Hind’s name was spelt is a matter for debate. Anyway the 'e' differentiates our boat from other 'inferior' less well travelled Golden Hinds. |
