Guayas at the start of the Tall Ships Race

The most noticeable thing about the Equadorian Barque ‘Guayas’ is her giant county ensign ~ larger than her mains’le. This flag may not add speed to her race but looks great. The ensign did not stop her winning the most cherished prize of the Tall Ships Race, the ‘Friendship Cup’.

This was awarded to her for being the most liked ship and crew as voted by her peers on the other competitor boats. Amerigo Vespucci ~ Guayas ~ Stad Amsterdam off Toulon 2007 can also be seen at the start of the Toulon leg of the tall ships race, in rather different conditions.
