Wooden Masts & Spars at the Dournenez Festival Brittany 2004

It is still possible to see a forest of metal masts and spars at a gathering of square riggers in port before a tall ships race. The rare thing about these ‘sticks for canvas’ is that they are all wooden.

Every other year the historic port of Douranenez in Brittany holds a festival of the best boats of all kinds, working boats mainly but some yachts. The best part is that a large part of this fleet sail everyday in the bay during the festival.

I photographed the square riggers before their crews awoke in the morning, no doubt after a night sampling the hospitality of the port.

There are a whole range of Square Riggers sailing in that section of tallshipsandsmallships.com
