Brixham Trawler Race, Torbay, May 1999

In 1997 a Brixham fisherman and artist Toni Knights with others revived the Kings Cup Heritage race for the remaining Brixham sailing trawlers. This was first awarded in 1913 in honor of the King and was raced for by professional fishermen until the second world war.

This picture shows Keewaydin built 1913 on the left and Provident, built 1924, in the middle with other trawlers away in the distance. Actually Keewaydin is an East Coast Smack but she is welcome to join the Brixham boats in a way that she may not have been in the days of fishing under sail.

On the right is Guiding Star, built1907, a Looe Lugger. Looe Luggers and other gaff rigged boats have their own race at the same time as the trawlers.

The matching picture to this is ‘Vigilance’ & Looe Luggers, Brixham, Devon 2001.
